Green Parrots. Gino Strada, Charta Edition, 2004

Gino Strada began his work as war surgeon in 1989, working in Afghanistan, Somalia, Rwanda and Bosnia. In this book, he narrates the story of ten years of his work: an extraordinary experience alongside war victims.

The analysis of the devastating effects of landmines is a central theme of the book.

Green Parrots combines private and personal writing, thoughts on the work of a war surgeon and descriptions of places and people, narrated in a direct, immediate manner. The book, reprinted over 35 times in Italy, has sold more than 400,000 copies worldwide. It has been translated into English, French, German, Korean and Japanese.

The English version of Green Parrots was published in November 2004 (Charta Edition) with a foreword by the American historian Howard Zinn, and an afterword by Gino Strada.

The original version of the book,”Pappagalli verdi”, written in Italian, was published for the first time in 2000 by Feltrinelli.
