The winners of the Draw Your Future contest are:

The winning works are The red braid by Giancarlo Alci, and Persons, humanity, care by Valentina Stecchi.

The red braid by Giancarlo Alci is composed of three bandages woven 30 times, representing 30 years of EMERGENCY’s activities, at the top of which is the organisation’s logo. An iconic image that represents the union to give strength to each other, for a common purpose such as peaceful coexistence and the universal right to care, and that recalls care and healing in the choice of bandages as the depicted image.

The image submitted by Valentina Stecchi depicts three human figures interacting with EMERGENCY’s logo: a seamstress sewing, a reference to the suturing of wounds, but also to the act of repairing fractures between territories, peoples and cultures; a doctor with a stethoscope auscultating the central part of the E of the NGO’s logo to represent care and attention to deep listening, and finally a baby crawling and playing with its hands dipped in red paint. Overall, an allusion to the organisation’s commitment to human rights, its daily practise of the right to care in Italy and around the world, and its future.

Aimed at students, young designers and emerging talents from all over the world, the contest asked participants to create an illustration that interpreted the work and values of the organisation using EMERGENCY’s logo, the “E” circled in red, as a starting point. A creation that would tell a vision of a possible and desirable future, based on the principles that have guided EMERGENCY’s work since its foundation: the right to care and health for all, equality, dignity, respect, peace.

The contest’s winning illustrations will become the theme of two T-shirts, one for adults and one for children, and will be added to the collection of special EMERGENCY T-shirts designed by 11 internationally- renowned illustrators. The ARTIVISTS X EMERGENCY T-shirts will be sold online and the proceeds will go towards the organisation’s activities. The winners of Draw Your Future will also receive the entire collection of T-shirts as a gift by the end of 2024, and their names will be featured alongside those of the 11 artists who have chosen to participate in the initiative.

Special Mentions:

Together with the winners, the jury of the Draw Your Future contest also highlighted two special mentions for the illustrations submitted by two other participants: Noemi Cascino and Gianluca Maroli will receive the special T-Shirt collection as a gift.

In the first illustration, entitled For a path of peace, EMERGENCY’s logo becomes a container of symbols: the sun, which illuminates and warms our path, the white dove to represent freedom, the olive tree for peace, sustenance and fertility. Completing Noemi Cascino’s image is the inscription ’30 years of care, for a world without wars’.

A ship sailing on the sea and lashed by the wind, an element that in the sky is composed to form the big E of EMERGENCY’s logo, is the basis of Gianluca Maroli’s illustration. All in strict red and white, it is entitled AiutarSea: a play on words that, together with the image, simultaneously expresses both the mutual help offered among members of the same community, as the human family is, and the sea where EMERGENCY carries out search and rescue activities, which rescued 1,219 people between December 2022 and the end of 2023.

The Draw Your Future Contest

To mark the 30th anniversary of our founding, EMERGENCY, alongside Desall, is inviting students, young designers and upcoming talent from around the world to come up with a drawing of “a story yet to be written”, which depicts the work, values and ideas of our organisation.

EMERGENCY’s logo will be the starting point on this journey. We are not looking for a restyling of the existing logo; rather, it should be made part of an image that, as a whole, depicts a vision for the future – a vision based on peaceful coexistence between peoples, on rights that are acknowledged without discrimination, on solidarity and mutual respect.

You can take part until 29 February 2024. Download the project files at: https://www.desall.com/Contest/EMERGENCY-Draw-Your-Future/Brief.
