Following the Russian invasion in February 2022 and the subsequent ongoing war, Ukraine’s healthcare system has been severely impacted. Many facilities have been destroyed, damaged, or repurposed primarily for military use. Numerous doctors, surgeons, and nurses have either fled the country or been enlisted to serve in civilian hospitals that have been partially or entirely converted into military hospitals.

In some of the most isolated areas, where healthcare access remains critically limited, EMERGENCY is actively working on a primary healthcare project aimed at strengthening access to care in remote locations lacking clinics, medical staff, and essential services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide interpretation between Ukrainian/Russian and English or Italian, ensuring accurate and clear communication both ways.
  • Translate written and verbal communications from EMERGENCY staff into Ukrainian/Russian and vice versa.
  • Support EMERGENCY staff in understanding cultural specificities of the beneficiaries and local partners to establish effective communication.
  • Act as a key point of support for the Field Coordinator in interactions with Community Health Workers, feldshers, doctors, patients, and local authorities.
  • Support the Project Coordinator/Country Director in communications with local authorities.
  • Ensure confidentiality, impartiality, and neutrality in all interactions with beneficiaries and stakeholders, contributing to building trust between parties.
  • Actively participate in project-related activities, including information and outreach initiatives.
  • Facilitate key logistical, administrative, and management tasks performed by EMERGENCY’s international staff.
  • Provide support to the international staff in case of project needs
  • When needed, assist with drafting and/or reviewing written documents.
  • Perform any other tasks necessary for the successful implementation of the project.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in Ukrainian, Russian, Italian and/or English (both written and spoken).
  • Strong intercultural communication skills and an understanding of cultural dynamics in the project context.
  • Ability to use basic computer programs, including Microsoft Office and Outlook.
  • Commitment to EMERGENCY’s principles of neutrality, impartiality, and professionalism.
  • Previous experience in cultural mediation or humanitarian work in health settings.
  • Flexibility and ability to work in a dynamic environment.
