“The Republic protects health as a fundamental right of the individual and in the interest of the community, and guarantees free treatment to the destitute”, says the Italian Constitution. Yet, in practice, this right is often overlooked: migrants, foreigners, and poor people often have no access to care because they are not aware of their rights, language difficulties, or are unable to navigate a complex health system.
It is because we were aware of this and we had the desire to ensure the right to healthcare for everyone, even in our own country, that our Programme in Italy was born.
