X-Ray Technician

The X-Ray Technician is responsible for managing radiodiagnostic services.

He/She ensures that radiological examinations are carried out correctly, and is responsible for managing the department and the local staff within the project.

WORK AND ORGANISATION

The role is based in an environment of international professionals with whom the X-Ray Technician will need to liaise and collaborate in order to achieve the required diagnostic and interventional objectives.

Examinations are carried out in accordance with the guidelines and protocols of the facility in which the professional is based.

The key figures responsible for coordination within the clinical area of the projects are:

• Medical Coordinator (MC), who has organisational and managerial responsibility for the clinical side of operations and for hospital staff.
• Head Nurse (HN), who reports to the MC and is responsible for all non-medical healthcare staff at the hospital.

The working day begins at 8.00 am with a meeting to discuss the most complex cases. The shift has no set end time but follows the daily routine of the hospital.

Where required, the X-Ray Technician will be on call for in-hospital emergencies and urgent cases during night-time hours and at weekends.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

All EMERGENCY international personnel are expected to know and follow the hospital admissions criteria, guidelines, protocols, and the diagnosis and treatment standards in use in the Centre, and to ensure the correct compilation of clinical records and statistics in both computer and paper formats.

The main duties and responsibilities of the X-Ray Technician are:

• Department management: workflows, shift organisation, planning of daily activities;
• Order management: consumables, devices in use within the department, various types of instruments and materials, liaising with the Pharmacy and Logistics departments, and, where necessary, with the Hospital Network (HN) or Medical Centre (MC);
• Supervision of the proper conduct of examinations and the correct use of the equipment provided.

The X-Ray Technician assists and supports local staff whilst examinations are being carried out.

• The technician’s work must focus particularly on identifying gaps in the local staff’s theoretical and practical training, implementing specific on-site measures or, where necessary, through ad hoc lessons and/or courses, as discussed and approved by MC & HN.
• Clinical research and case collection in accordance with the scientific programmes of the specialist sector within EMERGENCY’s Medical Division.

CASELOAD AND EQUIPMENT

The radiodiagnostic services are organised as follows:

–    X-ray stands, radiology tables and portable units with DR technology (all projects).

–    Siemens SOMATOM go.Up CT scanners (Uganda, Afghanistan and Sudan).

–    C-arms for operating theatre support (Sierra Leone, Afghanistan)

–    Catheterisation laboratory (Sudan)

–    ‘MedStation’ PACS (all projects)

SURGICAL CENTRE FOR WAR VICTIMS – Kabul, Afghanistan

Treating patients of all ages with major trauma, in particular gunshot wounds, injuries caused by explosions, landmines, unexploded ordnance and other serious traumas, from Kabul and the neighbouring provinces, with patients admitted via A&E or transferred from EMERGENCY’s network of first-aid clinics. Its services include emergency and trauma surgery, intensive care, radiology with CT scans, a laboratory, a blood bank, physiotherapy and rehabilitation.
Most examinations involve conventional radiography, whilst contrast-enhanced examinations are less common. CT scans may cover all body regions and are performed with or without contrast medium, depending on the clinical indication. The TSRM’s remit also includes working in the operating theatre for orthopaedic procedures requiring fluoroscopy using a mobile image intensifier.

SURGICAL CENTRE – Goderich, Sierra Leone

As the national referral hospital for trauma and emergency surgery, it admits patients transferred from across the country and, in some cases, from neighbouring countries. Admission criteria include trauma, emergency surgery (such as strangulated hernias and bowel perforations) and, subject to the urgency of cases, elective surgery, as well as a specialist programme for injuries caused by the ingestion of caustic soda, which are common among children.

The hospital has an A&E department, three operating theatres, an intensive care unit, a radiology department, a laboratory, a blood bank, a physiotherapy department and inpatient wards.

Conventional X-rays and operating theatre assistance constitute the main part of the work

 “SALAM” CENTRE FOR CARDIAC SURGERY — Khartoum, Sudan

A specialist cardiac surgery hospital that treats children and adults with congenital or acquired heart conditions, in particular rheumatic valvular heart disease, from Sudan and other African countries, subject to prior cardiological assessment and a referral for surgery. Services include open-heart surgery, cardiology consultations, diagnostic and interventional haemodynamics, peri- and post-operative care, and monitoring of anticoagulant therapy (TAO/INR). Despite the ongoing conflict, the Centre continues to provide free life-saving treatment, supported by a network of cardiology clinics to monitor patients who are unable to travel to Khartoum.

The most common tests carried out on patients include chest X-rays, chest, brain and vascular CT scans, fluoroscopy to check that mechanical heart valves are functioning correctly, and coronary angiograms.

CHILDREN’S SURGICAL HOSPITAL – Entebbe, Uganda

EMERGENCY’s paediatric surgical hospital in Entebbe (Uganda) admits children and young people aged between 1 and 18 who require elective paediatric surgery, selected following specialist assessment and via waiting lists.

The department provides free treatment for congenital malformations, urological, gynaecological and gastroenterological conditions, cleft lip and palate, and other general surgical conditions.

The main activities of the radiology department consist of ultrasound scans, contrast-enhanced radiological examinations of the digestive and excretory systems, conventional radiology examinations and CT scans.

GUIDELINES AND PROTOCOLS

Further information on the guidelines, protocols and clinical services relevant to the post along with details of the instruments and equipment available will be provided at interview and during the period of preparation for the mission.
The general requirements and conditions apply to all the international staff.

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS

–    Degree in Medical Radiology Imaging and Radiotherapy.

–    At least 3 years’ work experience, with a particular focus on paediatrics, cardiac surgery/haemodynamics and traumatology.

–   Good knowledge of English

AVAILABILITY REQUIRED

6 months’ overseas stay including a period of leave to be taken at the end of the mission in agreement with the coordinator. Shorter missions may only be considered for specific needs as defined by the organisation
