From a Road Accident to Recovery: M.’s Story in Afghanistan

When 13-year-old M. was struck by a car while riding his bicycle in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, he suffered a serious head injury that required emergency surgery.

Before the accident, M. was a student whose days were spent between school and home, where he lived with his parents and three siblings. His family earned their living through farming.

Following the accident, his family travelled approximately three hours by taxi to reach EMERGENCY’s Surgical Centre in Lashkar-Gah.

Upon arrival, M. underwent emergency surgery. Our medical team treated his head injury, controlled the bleeding, and stabilised his condition before admitting him for further care and monitoring.

For M.’s father, seeing his son conscious and able to speak again brought enormous relief. “I didn’t know what to do or where to go,” he recalled.

The cost of private hospital treatment would have been beyond his family’s means. At EMERGENCY’s Surgical Centre, however, M. received the urgent medical care he needed, completely free of charge.

His father expressed his gratitude: “We were delighted that our son could receive free treatment.”

We are not abandoning Afghanistan.

EMERGENCY’s Surgical Centre in Lashkar-Gah is co-funded by the European Union.
