Ukraine | Update after overnight attack on Kyiv, 1-2 July

Kyiv was subjected to a massive overnight attack between Wednesday and Thursday. Luca Rifiorati, EMERGENCY Programme Coordinator in Ukraine, was in the capital at the time and shared his experience with us:

“On Wednesday night into Thursday morning, Kyiv was once again hit by a heavy, large-scale attack.

An attack I experienced first-hand, as I had been in the Ukrainian capital for a series of meetings relating to EMERGENCY’s projects in the country.

That evening, reports had been circulating on nearly every news channel, announcing that a massive attack was imminent. It was difficult to get to sleep.

At around 2:00 am, we were forced to move down to the lower floors of the building where I was staying, as the first explosions began to reverberate throughout the city.

The attack lasted around three hours, reportedly involving dozens of cruise and ballistic missiles, along with numerous drones that struck the capital.

The bombardments hit residential buildings and also damaged an A&E department.

The provisional toll stands at 27 people dead and more than 85 injured.”
