As Health Systems Crumble, Has Sudan Become The Forgotten War? – Panel Discussion

10am, 13 November 2024
Why is so little heard about the catastrophic situation in Sudan? Just how bad is the situation there and what can be done to help? This session provides a first-hand perspective from medical professionals and humanitarians on the front line.
EMERGENCY President Rossella Miccio hosts a discussion about the devastating impact that a year and a half of conflict has had on the civilian population of Sudan, in what for months has been among the world’s worst displacement and hunger crises.

Dr Suha Abdelwahab Abdallah shares her experience at the Salam Centre for Cardiac Surgery in Khartoum, Sudan, where she is responsible for the Oral Anticoagulation Therapy Clinic – an essential facility that provides health screenings and distributes the medications needed for life following heart surgery – and continues to work to provide free medical care in the midst of war.

"Despite the enormous need, the Humanitarian Response Plan has been funded by international donors by only 50%. Supplies are limited, people are limited, the situation is devastating.
We continue to provide the best possible care in Sudan. By staying with them, we show them practically that they are not alone. This is the most important message we can send out: not to leave the Sudanese people alone at this time."

Rebuilding Hope: Healing, Reconstruction, and Resilience

9am, 14 November 2024
As attacks on healthcare systems in armed conflicts continue to rise, this panel tackles a crucial question: How can we rebuild communities when their lifeline – healthcare – is under siege? This discussion will explore the essential roles of key stakeholders, especially regional economic bodies, in the recovery and healing process. Panelists will drive forward vital solutions and policy strategies aimed at building resilience and renewing hope in areas most affected by conflict.
EMERGENCY President Rossella Miccio joins this panel alongside representatives from UNRWA, the UN, and government ministers from Palestine and South Africa, moderated by Yalda Hakim, Sky News’ Lead World News Presenter.
