The Hospital Director (HD) is responsible for the overall supervision and management of EMERGENCY’s hospital, with a focus on the effective implementation of all medical and non-medical activities, efficient resource management, and financial planning, in compliance with the quality standards defined by the Organization and local regulations.
The role requires comprehensive strategic and operational management, aiming at continuous improvement of the services offered, economic sustainability, and patients’ satisfaction, while maintaining a strong commitment to the organization’s humanitarian mission.
The Hospital Director (HD) reports to the Country Director/Area Director of the Field Operations Department (FOD).
Main duties and responsibilities are:
EXTERNAL RELATIONS MANAGEMENT:
- Represent the hospital to local health authorities, international organizations, donors, and media, in coordination with the Area Director
- Support the Country Director or, in their absence, manage the care and development of relationships with public institutions, institutional partners, and stakeholders, with particular attention to the health sector and professional training related to hospital activities.
- Maintain relations with national and international partners, governmental agencies, and NGOs to ensure appropriate coordination in line with the organization’s healthcare activities.
- Manage media relations by participating in interviews, press conferences, and institutional meetings.
- Work closely with the organization’s communication teams to ensure an effective communication strategy.
MANAGEMENT AND COORDINATION OF HOSPITAL ACTIVITIES:
- Supervise and coordinate all hospital activities, ensuring compliance with EMERGENCY’s standards and guidelines.
- Ensure close collaboration between the Medical Coordinator and non[1]medical department heads (or the Operation Manager, where present) for the smooth running of the hospital, balancing healthcare priorities with operational resources, and resolving unforeseen issues in consultation with the Country Director, Area Director, and relevant desks.
- Directly supervise the operations area, ensuring that all activities align with defined strategic goals.
- Monitor the implementation of the objectives and activities set out in the hospital’s strategic and operational plan, as agreed with the Area Director and the Medical Coordination Unit (MCU).
HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT AND ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE:
- Coordinate the project’s human resources, collaborating with the FOD HR Department and Department Heads for personnel planning and management, including HR sizing, recruiting, training, and performance management.
- Supervise and manage the performance of non-medical staff, ensuring proper task allocation and participating in performance evaluation processes in close collaboration with Department Heads.
- Coordinate the implementation of any structural or organizational changes to optimize hospital efficiency.
- Organize and facilitate internal communication among different departments and hierarchical levels to optimize workflow.
FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT AND BUDGETING:
- Participate in the drafting and supervision of the hospital’s annual budget, ensuring alignment with strategic and operational objectives.
- In collaboration with the administration department, continuously monitor consumption and expenses, ensuring effective resource allocation and compliance with defined financial constraints.
- Work with the Administration and Grant Management Departments to manage financial flows and project funding.
- With the support of the administrative department, monitor operational costs, identify inefficiencies, and propose solutions to optimize the hospital’s financial management.
DEVELOPMENT OF NEW PROJECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES:
- Support the CD or, in their absence, take the lead in identifying and proposing new opportunities for the development of hospital services and new areas of intervention aligned with EMERGENCY’s priorities.
- In the absence of the CD, work directly with the Grant Management and Foundations teams to identify funding opportunities and donors to support the hospital’s development and expansion, and contribute to proposal writing.
EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AND CONTINGENCY PLANNING:
- Ensure the hospital is prepared to handle emergency situations, including health crises, natural disasters, or other unforeseen events.
- Coordinate the development and implementation of emergency plans to ensure a rapid and effective response when needed.
- Work closely with local authorities and other emergency organizations to coordinate interventions in critical situations.
REQUIREMENTS
- Degree in Medicine, Economics, Healthcare Facility Management, Management Engineering, or a related field.
- Previous experience in the operational management of hospitals or international healthcare programs (at least 5 years).
- Proven skills in financial planning, human resources management, and the implementation of complex projects.
- Experience in healthcare performance analysis and monitoring.
- Excellent communication and people management skills, with a focus on team motivation and professional growth.
- Fluent knowledge of English (minimum level required: C1).
- Willingness to work in complex contexts and in areas with limited resources.
Availability required:
Minimum availability of one year with the possibility of extension, including an onboarding/training period, to be agreed with the Area Director.
